Cryolite's natural output is scarce and is usually manufactured artificially.
The amount of cryolite used in the aluminum industry is large, and the annual consumption in the world is about 700,000 tons. As a flux for aluminum refining by electrolysis, cryolite must meet certain requirements in terms of sodium-aluminum mole ratio, impurity content, water content, etc. The industrial quality requirements of cryolite are:
First, the higher the ratio of sodium to aluminum in cryolite should be, the higher the mole ratio, the higher the current efficiency of electrolytic aluminum refining, the less fluorine loss, the less environmental pollution caused, and the higher mole ratio cryolite is more suitable for use in industries other than the aluminum industry. Secondly, the content of impurities such as silicon oxide, iron oxide and phosphorus pentoxide in cryolite should be low, and the presence of these impurities directly affects the quality of aluminum ingots and the current efficiency of aluminum refining.
Third, the water content of cryolite should also be as low as possible, the presence of water will increase the consumption of cryolite.
Cryolite is mainly used as a flux for aluminum electrolysis; it is also used as a wear-resistant additive for grinding products, which can effectively improve the wear resistance of grinding wheels, cutting and chipping power, and extend the service life and storage time of grinding wheels.
